This is the biography of Siboniso Duma, a South African politician who is the provincial chairperson of the African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal. He is also a Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs in the KwaZulu-Natal government. He rose to political prominence in the ANC Youth League of KwaZulu-Natal and has been a member of the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature since 2014.
Early Life and Education
Siboniso Duma was born in Mtwalume, a small town on the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal. His mother was a domestic worker and his father, a construction worker in Durban, died when he was a child. He has three siblings. He attended a local school in his hometown and later enrolled at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, where he joined the ANC Youth League (ANCYL).
Siboniso Duma Political Career
Duma began his political career as the deputy chairperson of the ANC’s George Mbhele local branch on the Lower South Coast between 2004 and 2006. In May 2010, he was elected deputy provincial secretary of the ANCYL’s KwaZulu-Natal branch.
He supported the controversial politician Julius Malema in his bid for re-election as national president of the league. Still, he later clashed with him over the support for the incumbent ANC president Jacob Zuma. In October 2011, the ANCYL national leadership disbanded the leadership committee of the KwaZulu-Natal ANCYL, ending the terms of Duma and other officials.
In 2014, Duma was elected as a member of the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature and became the legislature’s Chair of Chairs, overseeing the work of the portfolio committees. He was also a member of the ANC provincial executive committee and the provincial working committee. He was seen as a loyalist of Zuma and a critic of the former premier Senzo Mchunu, who was ousted by the pro-Zuma faction in 2016.

In July 2022, Duma was elected as the provincial chairperson of the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal, defeating the incumbent Sihle Zikalala, who was aligned with the new ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa. Duma’s victory was seen as a boost for the Zuma camp and a setback for Ramaphosa’s efforts to unify the party. Duma also gained media attention for his role in handling the conference at the Olive Convention Centre in Durban, where he urged the supporters of Zuma, who was facing corruption charges, to listen to Ramaphosa’s speech without disturbing him.
In August 2022, Duma was appointed as the MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs in the newly formed cabinet of Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube, who was also elected at the same conference. Duma’s portfolio is responsible for promoting economic growth, job creation, tourism development, and environmental protection in the province.
